Vivid prismatic orange crocoite crystals dramatically contrasted against a pale white matrix of massive dundasite.

Description

Vivid prismatic orange crystals of crocoite — the striking lead chromate mineral — emerge dramatically from a pale matrix of massive white dundasite. The intense chromatic contrast between crocoite's saturated orange and the alabaster-white dundasite creates a composition of exceptional visual and mineralogical power.
In Tasmania, old lead ore deposits were slowly rusting near the surface. Groundwater carrying traces of chromium — naturally leached from nearby rocks — trickled through and chemically reacted with the lead minerals. The result: vivid orange prismatic crystals of crocoite, perched on top of white dundasite. Chemistry as unlikely as it is beautiful. The vivid orange crystals grew over an estimated 100,000 to 500,000 years — an unusually slow rusting process made possible by Tasmania's specific groundwater chemistry.

The oxidation zone where crocoite forms is one of geology's quieter laboratories — a slow, patient process happening in near-silence beneath the Tasmanian landscape. The occasional deep creak of rock shifting under its own weight, and the faint sound of groundwater moving through cracks, would have been all that broke the quiet. The smell: faintly metallic and earthy, with a slight mineral sharpness — the scent of old lead ore slowly rusting in the dark.
Crocoite was named in 1832 by François Sulpice Beudant from the Greek 'krokos' (saffron), referring to its intense saffron-orange color. The mineral had previously been known as 'Sibirischer Rothbleierz' (Siberian red lead ore) since its discovery in the Ural Mountains in 1766 — making it one of the first chromium-bearing minerals ever described, nearly 20 years before chromium itself was identified as a chemical element in 1798. Dundasite was named in 1893 after its type locality, the Dundas district of Tasmania — the same region that also produces the world's finest crocoite specimens.
Crocoite, the vivid orange lead chromate mineral, is a recognized classic restricted to chromium-rich oxidized zones — notably the Dundas district of Tasmania, Australia. While isolated crocoite specimens appear on the market, the natural combination with white dundasite on a single matrix requires a precise paragenetic context and is considerably less common than single-species material.

This artwork is part of an exclusive limited-edition series exploring the hidden architecture of natural minerals. Each photograph reveals the intricate geometry, texture, and chromatic depth formed over millions of years, captured with museum-grade precision and printed to the highest archival standards.

Every print is produced using archival pigment inks on Hahnemühle fine art paper, ensuring exceptional color stability, tonal richness, and a lifespan of 60–100+ years under proper conditions. The surface structure of the paper enhances the mineral’s natural luminosity, giving the image a tactile, sculptural presence.

Special Edition A unique Artist’s Proof (AP 1/1) is available, featuring a mineral specimen presented together with the print. Its inclusion alongside the print transforms the work into a uniquely layered art object, where the physical mineral and its photographic interpretation amplify each other’s presence, rarity, and long-term artistic value.
Authenticity Each print is individually produced, inspected, and hand-signed by the artist. It is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and is part of a strictly limited edition. Once the edition is sold out, no further copies will ever be made.
