A striking combination of deep purple fluorite and olive-green copper arsenate olivenite crystals in vivid natural mineralogical contrast.

Description

A photogenic combination specimen uniting deep purple fluorite with vivid green olivenite, two mineralogically distinct species in striking natural contrast. The fluorite cubes provide a rich translucent backdrop, while the olive-green copper arsenate olivenite crystals add a complementary and visually dynamic accent — a pairing of aesthetic and scientific significance.
This specimen tells two stories separated by nearly 200 million years. The purple fluorite grew quietly in a hot underground vein during the age of the first dinosaurs. Much later — just a few million years ago — the same mine's copper-arsenic ore began to rust, and from that weathering, green olivenite crystals grew directly on top of the ancient fluorite. Two completely different moments in Earth's history, sharing one rock. The fluorite took an estimated 5 to 20 million years to grow; the olivenite on top of it formed comparatively quickly — over perhaps 50,000 to 200,000 years. The same rock holds nearly 200 million years of Earth's history.

The fluorite formed in deep geological silence over millions of years — sealed vein, cold darkness, the faintest mineral smell of ancient hot water long since gone. When the olivenite phase began, millions of years later, the environment shifted: the occasional drip of oxidizing water, a faint metallic-copper scent like verdigris forming on old bronze, slowly building in a chamber that had been silent for longer than life has existed on land.
Fluorite: named from Latin 'fluere' (to flow), root of both 'fluorine' and 'fluorescence'. Olivenite was named in 1820 by German mineralogist August Breithaupt from the German 'Olivenerz' (olive ore), referring to its characteristic olive-green to dull yellow-green color. Breithaupt was one of the most prolific mineral namers of the 19th century, formally describing over 40 new species. Olivenite belongs to the adamite supergroup of arsenates — a family that also includes libethenite, cornwallite, and paradamite.
Fluorite alone is a common mineral, but olivenite — the copper arsenate — is a moderately rare secondary species. Their natural co-occurrence as an aesthetic and scientifically interesting combination specimen, as produced by the Clara Mine in Baden-Württemberg, represents an uncommon mineralogical pairing that elevates the overall rarity of the piece above either species alone.

This artwork is part of an exclusive limited-edition series exploring the hidden architecture of natural minerals. Each photograph reveals the intricate geometry, texture, and chromatic depth formed over millions of years, captured with museum-grade precision and printed to the highest archival standards.

Every print is produced using archival pigment inks on Hahnemühle fine art paper, ensuring exceptional color stability, tonal richness, and a lifespan of 60–100+ years under proper conditions. The surface structure of the paper enhances the mineral’s natural luminosity, giving the image a tactile, sculptural presence.

Special Edition A unique Artist’s Proof (AP 1/1) is available, featuring a mineral specimen presented together with the print. Its inclusion alongside the print transforms the work into a uniquely layered art object, where the physical mineral and its photographic interpretation amplify each other’s presence, rarity, and long-term artistic value.
Authenticity Each print is individually produced, inspected, and hand-signed by the artist. It is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and is part of a strictly limited edition. Once the edition is sold out, no further copies will ever be made.
