Description

Slender brown acicular crystals of the rare magnesium iron borate azoproite rise alongside a prismatic brownish crystal of pseudobrookite on a compact natural matrix. This uncommon spatial association of two structurally related oxide-borate minerals gives this specimen particular interest from a mineralogical and paragenetic standpoint.
In Spain, a volcanic pocket superheated the surrounding rock to extreme temperatures. Inside this natural furnace, molten minerals sorted themselves by chemistry and crystallized into two distinct species side by side — like two different metals cooling in the same mould, each taking its own form. Forming in the intense heat of a volcanic environment, these crystals grew surprisingly quickly by geological standards — likely over a few thousand to tens of thousands of years as the volcanic pocket slowly cooled.

A volcanic pocket is not a quiet place — the environment would have been loud with the crackle and hiss of cooling ejecta, the sharp pop of contracting rock, the rush of escaping gas. The smell: intense sulfur, burning minerals, the acrid smoke of volcanic gases — like standing at the edge of an active fumarole.
Azoproite was named in 1975 after the Azo River in the Sakha Republic (Yakutia), eastern Siberia, near its type locality. Pseudobrookite literally means 'false brookite' — from the Greek 'pseudo' (false) + brookite, the titanium dioxide mineral it superficially resembles. Brookite itself was named in 1825 in honor of Henry James Brooke (1771–1857), English crystallographer. So pseudobrookite carries a double etymology: a homage to one scientist's work, prefixed with a disclaimer that it is not quite what it appears to be.
Azoproite is a rare magnesium iron borate mineral recorded from only a small number of localities globally. Its natural co-occurrence with pseudobrookite — itself an uncommon titanium iron oxide typically found in volcanic ejecta and skarn environments — creates a paragenetically significant and distinctly uncommon mineral association on a single specimen.
